How To Do the Thing (part 1): Focusmate

Don’t want to read through the long version? Scroll to the bottom for the TL;DR.

Hello, fellow ADHD-ers!

Today, I'm excited to share my most recent hyperfocus - an empowering tool that can revolutionize the way we work: Focusmate.com. This is not sponsered, but is a tool I use daily and I just had to share!

What is Focusmate?

Focusmate is an online platform specially designed to boost productivity, accountability, and connection among all of us with ADHD and beyond. At its core, Focusmate taps into the magic of virtual coworking to create a supportive and uplifting environment for those of us who often find it hard to stay on track.

What can you use it for?

Basically anything! Here's what I use it for:

  • Morning routine

  • Meditation & reading (new habits I want to implement more consistently)

  • Work tasks

  • Practicing hobbies

  • Making phone calls

  • Responding to emails

  • Organizing my day

Other people I've co-worked with have used it for:

  • Work projects

  • Passion projects

  • Morning routine

  • Problem solving

  • Decision making

  • House cleaning

  • Packing for a trip

  • Phone calls

  • Emails

  • Etc.

How Does Focusmate Work?

The beauty of Focusmate lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. Once you log in to the website, you can schedule live, virtual coworking sessions with a diverse community of users from all over the world. During these sessions, you'll be paired up with a "Focusmate" for a pre-chosen focus interval of 25 minutes, 50 minutes, or 75 minutes.

Here's what you can expect from a typical session:

  1. Setting a Goal: At the beginning of each session, you share your goals and tasks with your Focusmate. Articulating your objectives helps solidify your commitment and focus, and separates the task selection from the time that you’re actively working on your tasks.

  2. Silent Productivity: When the session kicks off, you and your Focusmate get to work on your respective tasks with complete focus. Having someone else working alongside you, even virtually, adds that extra bit of accountability and inspiration.

  3. Supportive Environment: Although the session is quiet, the virtual connection fosters a supportive and judgment-free space. We know how tough it can be to work alone with ADHD, but with Focusmate, you'll feel connected to others who truly get it.

  4. Debriefing: After the session, you get a quick chance to discuss your progress and any challenges you faced. This reflection time helps you stay on track and find ways to make future sessions even better.

Benefits of Focusmate for ADHD Brains

  1. Accountability and Structure: ADHD often brings a lack of structure and accountability to our workdays. Focusmate helps create a scheduled routine, bringing order to chaos and allowing us to regain control over our time and tasks.

  2. Reduced Procrastination: The pressure of having a dedicated work partner during sessions minimizes the temptation to procrastinate. When you know someone is counting on you to work alongside them, it becomes easier to resist distractions.

  3. Clear End Point: A common approach to tasks is to work on them until we are “done”. However, for ADHD brains, “done” can be unclear and its easy for time blindness to make it feel like the end of the task will never come. By committing to a specific duration of work time, the end is clear and it is easier to regulate our energy and attention during our focus time.

  4. Externalized Focus: Our ADHD minds can sometimes struggle to maintain focus independently. With Focusmate, the external presence of a virtual coworker keeps us anchored to the task at hand, making it easier to stay on track.

  5. Building a Supportive Community: The Focusmate community is a treasure trove of support and understanding. By connecting with others who share similar experiences, we gain a sense of belonging and camaraderie, which can be incredibly empowering. I often find myself adding people as favourites to work with them in the future.

  6. Practice Executive Functioning Skills: Regularly engaging in focused work sessions helps strengthen our executive functioning skills over time. Improved time management, organization, and planning become natural byproducts of consistent use.

  7. Safe Space for Neurodiversity: Focusmate fosters an inclusive and accepting environment, where neurodiversity is embraced and celebrated. This understanding atmosphere allows us to feel comfortable, supported, and free from judgment.

In our quest to maximize our potential as individuals with ADHD, embracing tools like Focusmate can make a world of difference. With its unique blend of productivity, connection, and understanding, Focusmate becomes an invaluable asset in our journey towards success. So, let's schedule those sessions, and unlock the true potential of our ADHD brains! Together, we'll revel in the beauty of neurodiversity and create a supportive community that empowers us to thrive. Happy body doubling!
